A PIONEER CASE OF TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH IN DRUG DISCOVERY AND DEVELOPMENT IN BRAZIL: THE IMMUNOMODULATOR P-MAPA

The Brazilian compound P-MAPA (aggregated polymer of protein magnesium ammonium phospholinoleate-palmitoleate anhydride obtained from Aspergillus oryzae fermentation) has been scientifically studied since the 80s by Brazilian, Chilean and American scientists joined in a non-profit research network called Farmabrasilis.

 

P-MAPA is effective acting in the immune system, by inducing proliferation of T lymphocytes, cytokine production, mainly interferon-g and interleukin-2 and NK cell activity.

 

Here, we present the trajectory of this research network, and discuss the significance and perspectives of this collective research effort as an example of drug discovery and development in Brazil.

AN IMMUNOMODULATOR AGAINST MALARIA INFECTION

 Re- and emerging diseases are still the major causes in morbidity and mortality globally, besides the appearance of drug-resistant strains. 

 

 Previous results showed that P-MAPA induced T lymphocytes proliferation, cytokine production (interferon-gamma and interleukin-2), and NK cell activity (Farmabrasilis, 2008), suggesting an action against infections caused by intracellular pathogens.

 

Objectives. The aim of this study is to study the toxicity and the action of P-MAPA in malaria in different protocols.
